The motto is off. Compare the placement of trust in the motto to any genuine 1877 S example. It appears to be a counterfeit. Below is a PCGS genuine 1877 S example to compare the motto.  Edited by Slider23

I'm not very familiar with these coins, but how is the motto off? I trying comparing visually, and they look the same to me? I'm always trying to learn. Thanks in advance.

Motto is definitely "off": IMN ? Extra letter between WE and TRUST? And TRUST is incorrectly placed. It reminds me of a listing I saw where the seller had used AI to monkey with the coin image. Whether fake or just doctored image, it's best to avoid this one.  Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

I am not either but did a side by side comparison with the PCGS coin provided by Slider23 and the coin in question. TRUST, that Slider23 spoke of sticks out like a sore thumb and I also noticed the mint mark style is wrong too. To me the feather design on the coin in question also look really off in comparison to the real coin.  -makecents-

First red flag: "Seller does not accept returns."
As noted above, the motto and mint mark are wrong.

Yes, this is a counterfeit coin with some of the errors identified by responses. There are other markings/identifiers on both obverse and reverse that also confirm it being fake. I did reach out to the seller thinking maybe he wasn't aware of it being fake and here is his response, Quote:
Me - Hello, I was reviewing this coin and noticed that it is not a real 1877 S Half Dollar. It is a counterfeit and I wanted to let you know.
Seller - It is not it was graded but thanks for your novice advice
Seller - It's in a holder now
Me - Can you share photos and the certification number? The seller has over 1400 reviews so I thought a fake slipped in and he was not aware, now I know better. He never responded after I asked for the cert and images of it being in a holder. The 1877 S Half Dollar has over 30 different reverse dies and over 40 different die marriages with a mintage of 5,356,000. The mintmark does match the location on some of the reverse dies but the actual "S" looks like it was added to the coin and not part of the coin. That motto really does give it away as well as the mint mark and lower olive bud. |

With the side by side comparisons, I agree that the example on ebay is a counterfeit. Shame on the seller for knowingly selling a counterfeit coin!   Errers and Varietys.
