This half dollar has me on the fence. I've had it awhile and have gone back to it a few times. I would be interested in what others think.  The obvious issues that I see are the two scratches that I have tried to show in closeups. A semi-circle at the rim on the obverse and the diagonal scratch on the bottom right of the reverse. Both look old to me. In general, to me it doesn't have great eye appeal. On the other hand it wasn't born yesterday. A few of the stars seem to have doubling and maybe the date as well. I'm very weak in this area. My estimate at grading would be F15 details. In my opinion, without the above issues it's a fairly valuable coin. Maybe $180-200. With the issues I'm not sure what it might bring. Appreciate any thoughts to help me off the fence. [Sorry - it would probably help if I clarified that I'm on the fence about whether or not the coin has significant value over melt. For example, the scratches might not be seen as terribly intrusive to the overall design] Edited by lahave56

From what I can see, this coin is not real and therefore does not have any real value. Could you share better/clearer images of the obverse and reverse?

That eagle looks sick. I think the coin is a cast counterfeit.

Looking at the surfaces, I think you have a contemporary counterfeit.

I don't like the wear pattern of the obverse, well-worn from her right shoulder all the way down to her left toe but very little on the shield  Then Quote:
That eagle looks sick to me, looks like it's laughing. Overall, just looks off to me, major wear on the obverse but the reverse doesn't match. Edited by Greasy Fingers

The date is not correct, the horizontal lines in the shield on obverse is off, the vertical lines in the obverse shield should have 3 lines per group and not 2 and Liberty is just sicker than sick. On the reverse, same issues with the obverse shield and like others have said the bird looks sick, the letters on the legend are completely wrong. Like others have said, it looks like a contemporary counterfeit.

Interesting example, it almost looks like it was painted. I have to agree with it being fake.

The weird "patina" as @jbuck observed as being painted bothered me as well and I guess it led me to overlook some obvious flaws. I noticed the odd lines in the obverse shield as well but thought maybe this "painting" might be affecting what I was seeing. Similarly with the almost rust-like surfaces. Anyway, as always I appreciate the look and the feedback. I decided to try to take a few closeups for the record in case they might be helpful to anyone seeing this thread in the future. I used comparable segments from an image of an 1882 SL graded F15 from PCGS photograde for comparison. Also, perhaps a moderator could add (Counterfeit) at the end of the topic title as well. Contemporary counterfeits are collectible. They weren't made to fool collectors. They were made to fool merchants of the day. The Liberty Seated Collectors Club has excellent resources on the contemporary counterfeits. |
