I have one too! It is due to an incorrect metal mixture at the mint.

So if this is an incorrect mixture at the mint, does this make this quarter worth more ?

not an incorrect mixture or an error of any kind, it is just damage from the coin being in or on the ground for a long time

Well I think that if it was due to what you say biokemist6 chances are the writings and numbers on it would be faded out, wich in this case this quarter is top shape!I think they probably did make a black one just like they had made red pennies and gold or silver in other coins...needs further investigation hehee!

Now that I think about it there is the black beauty 1959 Jefferson error from an improper annealed planchet. Couldn't a quarter have the same error.

Sorry, my opinion is just environmental damage. Nothing special about that thing.

Although it's a little hard to tell from the picture exactly what that quarter looks like I believe there are several that are identical except for date in my change jar.

Nothing all that rare about it, just environmental damage. When I was searching Nickels heavily, I'd find about one per box of all different dates. I considered saving them and building a set out of them just because I thought it would be an interesting set. It would also give you a little something extra to search for.
