Just passed through 170,000 nickels searched ..... that's 4250 rolls .... $8500 face value .... and lots of fun!

I know in advance that this post will be of interest to only a select few of you ..... and that's OK ..... to those fellow USA nickel searchers ..... this is my calibration check for you.

Keep in mind that I consider a 'find' to be any USA nickel 1959 or prior ....... so ..... to the numbers ...

Overall Find Rates:

Overall Find Rate is 1.284% ..... an average of 1 find every 77.9 raw searched ..... equivalent to 25.7 finds per $100 box.

1930's find rate is 1 find every 1809 raw searched.

1940's find rate (excluding war silver) is 1 find every 209 raw searched.

1950's find rate is 1 find every 142 raw searched.

Special Coins Find Rates:

Liberty V find rate is 1 every 85,000 raw searched (found 2)

Buffalo find rate is 1 every 7391 raw searched (found 23)

War Silver find rate is 1 every 3148 raw searched (found 54)

Key Jefferson (the 9 coins with less than 10 million mintage) find rate is 1 every 7391 raw searched (found 23).

Jefferson Circulation Obsolescence:

Refer to a previous post of mine for the definition and math behind this interesting (to me) concept.

https://goccf.com/t/58454&SearchTerms=cirulation

Overall 1938-1959 Obsolescence is 81.18%

1930's is 81.90%
Pre-War 1940's is 82.10%
War Silver is 98.09%
Post-War 1940's is 78.03%
Early 1950's is 74.20%
Late 1950's is 67.77%

Buffalo Nickel Obsolescence:

First time for this data!

At 4250 rolls I figure it is time to start reporting on this statistic as well ..... recall how my definition of obsolescence works ..... sooo ...

Overall Buffalo nickel Obsolescence is 99.40%

This means ..... 9,940 of every 10,000 Buffalo nickels have disappeared from circulation today.

Some Prediction Fun with the Numbers:

My obsolescence rates for War Silver and Buffalo nickels can give reasonably accurate estimates of the total number of these coins still circulating today .....

Keep these totals in mind the next time you get discouraged in your roll searches.

Estimated number of War Silver in Circulation Today: 16.603,300

Estimated number of Buffalo in Circulation Today: 7,235,900

Updated Jefferson Top-10

Forget the total mintage numbers ..... they do not account for circulation obsolescence!

With the admitted problem of hoarding of the 1950-D which I have not solved ..... here are the Top-10 Most Difficult Jefferson nickels to find today with their predicted Find Rates:

1943-D @ 179,012 coins
1944-S @ 126,800 coins
1944-D @ 84,795 coins
1942-S @ 83,249 coins
1939-D @ 82,520 coins
1945-D @ 73,262 coins
1950-D @ 72,356 coins
1938-S @ 70,444 coins
1945-S @ 46,501 coins
1939-S @ 43,760 coins

I hope that the experienced nickel roll searchers out there will recognize the wisdom of this list ...... it sure matches with my finds.

Status of My Quest:

Goal: Complete my humble Whitman 9009 ... Jefferson circulation strikes 1938 thru 1961 .... all from local bank rolls.

Status: Still need two coins ..... 1938-S and 1943-D.

You should recognize them on the above Top-10 list.

Hope somebody out there enjoys this.

I love these updates, as I just started roll searching this year. To date, I've searched right at 850 rolls, and have found 5 of the 10 on your hardest to get list, but am missing 7 more that don't make the list.

I still need to update my own spreadsheet from the last two boxes - but my find rates are pretty much in line with yours, although I've found buffs and wars at nearly a 1-1 ratio so far.

I also keep a foreign find rate stat, which is currently at 1 every 1049 coins, nearly 2 p/box.

I need the same 2 you need to complete my circulation set and I am about ready to give up hope and go buy them, but ,then it wouldn't be a circulation set! I still think there is something more to finding these than just rarity. I found so many things rarer so why are these so tough to find?
