...so he has dug a hole in the ground four feet deep, packed his gold and silver in a piece of plastic PVC pipe, sealed it, and buried it.

That should be good protection for any PMs packed into the PVC pipe for sure, especially if his home is sufficiently isolated from view as to render his digging invisible to curious neighbors, delivery people, yard maintenance people, visitors, etc.

My great grandfather did exactly this... and then had the temerity to die without telling ANYONE, even his wife of 30+ years, where he had buried his small chest of eagles and double eagles. AFAIK, it was never found... at least by anyone in our family.

He also suggests using scrap metal and mirrors as decoys or using different kinds of booby traps for anyone trying to get near his metal.

Scrap metal and other junk used as decoys could prove useful against thieves with metal detectors, but installing any "booby traps" could get a person sued for everything they own and everything they ever will own, not to mention some serious jail time. In most jurisdictions, booby trap makers are not treated at all kindly by the local cops and courts when someone, even a thief, becomes seriously injured by their little surprises. Whether or not such individuals deserve this treatment is another discussion.

So whether your gold is buried, hidden, or stored in safes, what is the most important key to protecting your gold? Telling no one of it.

IMO, this is the real nugget in this article. Anonymity is one of, if not THE, best protection from thieves that we can have. "Loose lips sink ships" and all that.

There are, however, 4 people in my life whom I trust with my life and they know about the PMs I have collected. If I should die suddenly and unexpectedly, my PMs will go to my heirs and not be permanently lost in some unknown hole in the ground.

It is said that any determined person with a gun or weapon has nothing stopping them from your fortunes by forcing you to show them where you store them all.

Nope, nothing at all... except any guns, dogs, or alarm systems you may have of your own.

Therefore, this secrecy is the best way to avoid robbery from thieves "but also prying relatives and the tax man."

Agree on the secrecy for avoiding the attention of thieves and prying relatives but dodging the tax man could get one in some very serious trouble if your little charade is ever discovered... and there are a number of ways that this could happen.

One last comment on this. As is the case with diversification offering the investor some protection from major losses, so too can PMs be secured in various ways and in various locations. We do not have to depend upon a single method or location for ALL of our PM stash... nor do I.

I like the idea of painting a 100 oz silver bar black and using it as a door stop. That's one expensive door stop.

I don't think that is a good idea. In Longview, Washington they are having a rash of steel street drain covers stolen. They sell at $10 scrap value, but cost the city $110 to replace. What if a thief decided that your $2 steel doorstop was worth stealing? Could happen considering what is now going on.

Longview is having all sorts of problems lately. It's probably the Longshormen doing the stealing.

I read about this story...if anyone wants to know how to find burried gold and silver, look up this guy's address. Bad OpSec, in my opinion.

Bury your gold in the backyard. That is what happened at Fort Knox (when they had some!) Just ruminating.

Instructions for home burial: Attach a scent to it, not one that attracts dogs, because Fido may dig it up. NO! Attach a scent which repels dogs, then try to lead Fido to it. When you see him baulk, you know where to dig!

Another way is just throw it anywhere into your backyard on a dark night, then try to find it with a metal detector the next day. If you CAN'T find it, you KNOW it will be safe, because no body else will be able to find it either!

Actually, I am more of a traditionalist. I keep my gold coins in a hidden safe, that is very approximate to Funnel Web Spider (Artrax Robustus) holes. (Look THOSE up on the Net!), they make very good guardians, 24/7.

I can't think of any legitimate reason why anyone would have a drain cover, much less several. That pretty much means the scrap yard has to know they're stolen.

Most jurisdictions have some sort of record-keeping law.

If the city had any sense (I know that's asking a lot), they'd buy the covers from the scrap yard and agree not to prosecute in exchange for the names of the sellers. Why pay $100+ to replace them with new ones to steal?

This same thing is happening in some of the surrounding areas that I live. People steal the drain covers and then thrown them into the trunk of a car that they are selling for scrap. They are hidden from the people at the scrap yard and the thief is getting paid for the extra weight of the iron. Very sneaky!

And when the car goes through the shredder, all of the evidence is gone.

I have a friend who took the top casing of his picture window off and routed out the back of it. He put a groove on the inside bottom with a groove bit. He has fifteen ounces of solid gold inside his window trim. He has dowels glued into the wall and just pulls it off of the wall and pushes it back on. His curtain rod mounts are on the wall outside of the wood instead of being mounted to the casing. I thought it was pretty slick when he showed it to me. Besides his wife I am te only one who has seen it. He lives about a thousand miles from me so I don't think anyone can figure out who he is from my posting this info.

JuniorE,

I just searched every house 1000 miles away from you.

Oh, and on a side note, anyone interested in buying 15 ounces of gold?
Rest in Peace
