I saw this coin going for $10US advertised as a Limes Denarius and thought it might be interesting to check it out.Severus-Alexander--Limes-Denarius

Did some reading on limes and found that there are a few theories, non of which are real conclusive.

One thing I read was that limes are bronze coins made on the outlying borders of the empire and imitated official silver issues.
I thought for fun I'd see if I could find the issue that this one copied.

I found this one. Do you think this is it? It has the same inscription break at the top of the obverse. They copied it pretty good. Maybe cast from an official coin?

Then found this gold coin that is also very similar. I thought I would post it too.Severus-Alexander--Limes-Denarius

I don't know if these Limes copied gold coins or not. I didn't read anything about that.

I also don't know for sure if my coin is a genuine limes, or if it's cast or struck? I think it has a cast look though.

Anyway, it's been fun looking into the Limes. I don't think $10.00 was too bad for this coin. Some sell for more. I might keep my eye out for a reasonable silver one to go with it someday. The bronze coin is mine, the other two are pics from the web.

thanks

I have one lonely limes denarius of Septimius Severus in my collection that I got in an uncleaned lot. Unfortunately I have not been able to fully attribute it...

I'm with Bobbyhelmet on this topic. I know so little about the "Limes" coins that I cannot make any kind of knowledgeable reply. Maybe someday I will expand into that area, but for now I have enough to keep me happy.

Well that's ok.

I didn't really expect much out of this post. I'm not planning on perusing it very far. Just to have an example.

I'm always getting into something that's odd and nobody cares much about.

Thanks for the replies.
