I have my Type I SLQ, and now I am looking for a nice Type II SLQ for my 7070. Which would you prefer; a Full Head or Full Shield (Full Strike)? I do not believe that the Full Shield has a designation within the TOP III TPG. "Both head and rivet detail may not be present in the same coin, but only the presence of head detail defines the subtype"*. Obviously having both (Full Shield & Head) characteristics would be better, but if you had to choose, which would you prefer? * http://www.coinweek.com/coin-guide/...2-1917-1930/Edited by oih82w8 10/13/2011 09:04 am

Easy answer IMO: the FH coins are recognized as having higher value (sometimes much higher) so those are the best choice. Once I'd made a decision to pay the premium for FH I would hold out for a really nice FH that also had full details everywhere, including the shield.

on a 1916, I would rather have the full shield.

We can answer which is more valuable, but really your question is one that only you can answer for yourself. If you prefer to see a full shield, get a full shield. If you like a full head, get one of those. You are the person that is going to be looking at this coin in your collection. What other people like better pales in comparison to what you favor.
But since you asked, I'd pick a full head. It is the more delicate of the two in my opinion and having a well struck head really makes the coin look complete.

Where do your eyes get drawn to first? The (smaller area) head or the (larger, more centered area) shield? Most SLQ enthusiasts would be more inclined to focus on the head (myself included), however Q. David Bowers does make a good argument for the "shield detail". Just playing devil's advocate here.

I personally like the full shield. Like oih82w8 said, I think the eyes draw to the shield first. Just my opinion.

I usually prefer the full shield because you can oftentimes get one for not much more than a non full shield example. Given the choice I would take both FH and full shield.

The rivets on the shield are what draws my eyes first. Ususally, full rivets will mean at least 3/4 full head if not 100%.

The way I see it, I'm paying a premium for the FH designation because it signifies a full or very strong strike. So to me, it's not an either or. If I'm paying a premium, I expect a full head and a full shield. If I dont see it, I'm holding out for another piece unless it is discounted.
If it is discounted, I think a fully struck shield is more appealing to me than a full head.

I would prefer a full shield EXCEPT if the coin was one of those horrible strikes where the head is actually concave. Not my coin and not the flatest MS head I've seen but the only one I could find at the moment.

If I did have to choose I would go for full shield. Although I do think most full head coins would have enough shield detail to satisfy me. In theory, however, the head is small thing and the shield is big and this is an album type set, the full shield would make for a more attractive coin.
Also consider that some full head coins (because of their rarity) have absurd premiums IMO over an equally nice piece with just 3% of the coin looking a little less detailed. I have collected the SLQ set and with just a few missing, I've never found it worthwhile to pay for FH. In fact, out of FH, FB, or FS, respectfully.....I find the huge FH price increases to be the least deserving. Just my opinion though.

Full head vs. Full shield. Having collected Standing Liberty quarters for years, I prefer fully struck with full shield rivits , 10 toes, inner shield lines and sash line and buttons. Few SLQ's have all these attributes. Most full head do not have full strikes. I will always take a full strike over just a full head. Finding type 3 SLQ with a full or nearly full strike can be quite a challenge Happy hunting, Gary.

Type III meaning the recessed date 1925 - 1930? I can see the distinction of having a slot for this "type", but the Dansco (7070) people did not.
