Hello everyone,

I bought a new Philharmonik silver coin, and I handed it over to my father to have a look, and he dropped it on stone tiles in the kitchen. Left a mighty big dent on the side of the coin. Will the value have dropped much?

Thank you very much

Luckily it is a bullion coin, therefore you haven't lost much. Some put a premium on bullion coins, but it will always be worth it's weight in silver at the very least. ;)

It was a total accident and it won't terribly impact the value of this bullion coin I agree.

I have to agree, minimal price impact. In the future, it might be a good idea to have a soft landing underneath the coins in case of accidental droppage.

It must be something about showing our father's coins..lol. Something similar happened to me. We were in his car and I was showing him my newly purchased 1790 Dutch coin, and when handing it back to me, it fell under the seat of the car. It slid in between a small crevasse and I had to break out the toolbox and remove the entire seat to retrieve the coin.

Accidents happen. I glad that to hear that the minimal damage should have no impact on the value.

Let's stop handing our father coins to look at.

Thank you very much for your replies everyone! Much appreciated! I am very glad that there is hardly no impact on the value of my coin! Thank God it wasn't gold.

InvestorDom => I feel your pain ...

I handed one of my friends a fairly dated proof set, where the coins were merely resting in shallow pockets, rather than being securely positioned and/or behind plastic ... he is a stamp collector, plus he knows how attached I am to my coin collection, so I watched in utter disbelief as he tilted the display case to an almost vertical position and every single one of the proof coins tumbled forward and hit the cold tile floor, each making its own horrible "pinging" sound! ...

... to this day, I am still apologizing to him for calling him all of those derogatory names!

; )

Ummmm, I hope that you didn't make your Dad feel quite as stupid as my friend must have felt (yah, arrrgggh, that was a pretty bad day for everybody!)

Pass it with both hands next time. One holding it by the edge, and the other underneath cupping it.
Murphy is everywhere. You have to watch out.
Or sleeve/slab all your buys by bringing a couple of coin envelopes or 2x2 flips just to transport them to where your proper equipment is.

You would definitely get spot price on the coin when you try to sell it. The small premium on the coin being an Austrian Philharmonic is gone as most bullion dealers would resell such coins as being dinged or slightly scuffed. If you are one of those collectors/investors that like to keep the condition of the coins as minted, invest in a few Air-Tites or Lighthouse coin capsules, particularly when showing off coins, so when it is dropped, your heart doesn't skip a couple of beats. Also protects the coin from toning or fingerprint smudges.

My dad put a nice dent in my classic Dodge Charger. Wish it would've just been a coin.

fistfulladirt => OMG, I hope your coins weren't in the trunk!

Back in the day, I wrote-off my parents car ... now, when I put it into perspective, I guess that's kinda like I dipped, scrubbed and then whizzed their coins?

Agree on the bullion. Most modern bullion has been mass produced in such numbers that it won't likely have additional numismatic value and time soon.

Oh the horror stories of dropped coins.... I'm glad I learned my lessons on more common stuff. Never hand over a coin beyond a certain value.
