This poor nickel was the result of some serious old age die stamping but is uncirculated IMO. There are lots of things going on (die cracks, Cuds, planchet problems, etc.) but I would like opinions if this particular coin has any attributes that make it a documented variety. I was especially interested in the multi strike of the date... All help appreciated. Paleoguy

I can't help you with the variety, but I would like to say that is a very interesting Shield nickel. Talk about a tired pair of dies! Are the indentations near the "C" on the reverse planchet imperfections or are they from stray die material. Those dies were falling apart.

Hi Dave,
The holes on the reverse actually appear to be flaws in the planchet (i.e., loss of metal)....

1866 was a good year for errors in the Shield nickel series. There is a wonderful book (mine is in storage now) Out of print, but still available "The Shield Five Cent Series" by Edward L. Fletcher the best book I've found, though far from complete in listing every variety, seems like the Shield nickels and the 3 Cent nickels have so many die varieties, no reference can keep up with them.
