Hello I am new to collecting. I have a 1987 Lincoln Penny that has the motto In God We Trust on the very outside of the rim. Can someone help me with the correct term for this. Is it worth keeping.

Can you post some pictures? That will give us a better idea of what's going on with your coin.

Welcome to the forum. This is very common on copper plated zinc cents. It is not an error. It's simply an effect of the die deteriorating. The pressure of the strike starts at the middle and flows outward. The outer edge of the field deteriorates right before the rim. The motto isn't actually flowing over the rim.

While it is Die Deterioration, I also see it as being a MAD strike, though a picture of the reverse is needed to confirm this.

What are you referring to as errors? A MAD is not an error until there is design missing. The Die Deterioration is a die state and not an error. I'm just curious what you see on this coin in hand that I am missing.

Thank you I am new to all the terms used. I do see an extra L in the Liberty, and extra letters in the Motto and I am not sure if these are from the Die Deterioration or not. It is really hard to capture with this camera I have.

I understand you are new to this and I'm not trying to criticize you in any way. I just want to help you see what to look for and what not to look for. The MAD (misaligned die) is not worth a premium on this coin and the Die Deterioration is also not worth a premium. Both can be easily be found to this degree in circulation. The coin can be a keeper though for education purposes. I can't see the doubling you are talking about in your pics so I can't determine anything about that.

As you search through your coins keep the photos and questions coming. It's from threads like this that we can help you refine your keeper pile.
