Hello everyone. I'm new to this forum and new to coins (except for spending them). After finding a '43 steel cent, I became interested and found this website. Looking through all the coins I had around the house (a few thousand) didn't turn up much. But I did come across this 2005D dime. I was just wondering if anyone here knows what has to take place for this to happen:
Sorry about the image quality. I lost my macro lens and had to improvise.

The bright area is a depression in the field. But the letters aren't affected (despite what it might look like in the image. I blame the lens+camera.) Surely this can't be post-mint damage. Was this a damaged blank before it was struck? And is this a common occurence?
Rest in Peace

I really can't tell from the photo. I am just learning to identify errors and damage. The coin does have PMD. I see what appears to be green dots and that means that the metal is deteriorating.

Hang on, the experts will let you know for sure.

I am no expert either, but it almost looks like delamination of some sort. Just my guess.

Possibly a lamination error...

Looks like it was struck through a small area of grease.

Could be struck through, could just be stained.

It's definitely not lamination.

Looks like coppercoins called this one. I was also considering a clash, but then only part of the image is showing, which can't be the case. I'll go with just discoloration unless we are told that there is an actual indent in the coin's surfaces.

I'll have to agree with Chuck. A stain is a definite possibility.
