Nice key date quarter. I would call this an XF-40.

With their notorious weak strikes these coins often appear overgraded in a TPG slab. This one is probably solid for PCGS XF-40; much nicer than my ANACS VF-30. Nice pick-up!

I don't really agree with the partial contingent so far of it being XF. Although I don't have this exact date in XF (mine is F-12), this piece looks worse than all my XF SLQs. I know the strikes are almost always weak on these yadda yadda, but this one unfortunately has enough wear to fall to VF-30 or VF-35 IMO. That will also cost you a few hundred dollars :( . Look at the coin closely, look at the head, the border, the shield, it WAS a good strike actually. Not great, but good. Then there is the wear which is evident.
Regarding the post above mine, ANACS is nicer on SLQs than NGC and PCGS, so it might be possible to eeeek out an XF-40 from ANACS.

The thing is, this specific date is ESPECIALLY poorly struck; I have seen coins with half this detail in VF slabs. It looks XF-40 or better to me and looks to have some luster.

thanks for the comments all. Hesgut, you can't compare the 27-s with other slqs as far as grading is concerned. I am certain that this coin is a solid XF, after doing extensive comparisons to other PCGS and NGC certified 27-s's on Heritage. These coins have weak details from the outset. Also, notice the full reeding on the obverse, which is a sign of XF.

I beg to differ. I agree it has chance at XF, but I think it's probably a VF-35. It's not like we're far apart. Everyone keeps mentioning the weak strikes of the 27-S. SLQs are one of my main collections, I am well aware of the manor in which 27-S SLQs were struck. This particular piece, however, was not poorly struck. Everyone here seems to think that will help it's grade, but in this instance it might hurt it. This is a non-MS coin. A grader has to first look at the amount of wear. The amount of wear on this coin is consistent with a VF. The good strike and eye appeal are what brings you from a 30 to a 35....or what would bring you from a 40 to a 45.
You have wear on the shield, wear on the chain mesh, wear on the knee, and the reverse is clearly a VF unless the picture is deceiving --I don't see the argument on the reverse. Some 27-S SLQs were struck so badly that one with similar appearance (yet less surface abrasion and more luster) would be a XF.
SLQs are tricky to grade, and the vast array of quality in strikes will have you see coins with higher grades looks worse than those with lower on occasion. This is one of those that's gonna come out on the bottom.
Send it in to NGC or PCGS......let's make a small freindly $20 bet...35 or lower I win.

From my experience with TPG's if the coin is in the general area of a certain grade and if you have the time and money to spend to get a certain grade it is certainly achievable. I dont really have much faith in TPG's. Its hard to grade from pictures so I always take that into account when I post in these forums. Its lots of fun and good practice!
