The man depicted on the piece is Giuseppe Garibaldi, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giuseppe_Garibaldi On the other side, roughly between 8 and 9 o'clock so to say, I can read "morto", ie. dead or died. And since we know that the info refers to Garibaldi, the text at the bottom will probably say "died in Caprera, 2 June 1882". The upper part, hmm. Could be "al campione (something)". The symbol in the center is the Fasces which was used as a symbol of (controlled) power in ancient Rome, in Italy (primarily in the fascist years though) and in the US (see the dime coin) for example. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fasces

Here is an image that shows a medal like yours:

Seems that the medal was designed by Luigi Giorgi. And the text I could not quite decipher is "AL CAMPIONE INVITTO DEL POPOLO", ie. "To the undefeated champion of the people". This is a similar piece:

Dear Christian

I would like to thank you for the effort in helping to identify this medallion. It was found in an area where three wrecks lie on top of each other or in very close proximity. The most recent wreck was in the 1960, but the other two wrecks are older and presume this medallion was on these wrecks. While diving on this sight, you do not know which wreck you on, only by the artefacts found can you presume the identity of the wreck. The medallion was either a personal belongings or something like that. Being a medallion, this would not have been used a currency and therefore a quantity of them would have been unlikely.

Thank you again for the help. Regards turbo

That Garibaldi medal was apparently made shortly after he died, so it will be almost 130 years old. Of course a crew member could have had it with him even in the 1960s, but yes, I also assume that it was on an "earlier wreck". Then again I suppose that what makes yours interesting is not the piece itself but how you found it. :) Sounds like fun, or at least very interesting!
