I am just starting to collect the Walking Liberty half short set (1941-1947)in ms63 and 64(NGC and PCGS).Does anyone have any advise as to what I should be paying attention to?

If you stick to slabbed coins from NGC and PCGS you should be able to assemble a quality set. I would be focused on eye appeal. A handsome coin that draws your attention will make for a better option. You may come across darkly toned coins in 63 that are hard to really see the detail of the design. Many "s" mint coins are weakly struck, look for the better strikes having leg feathers and detail of liberty's left hand.

Pay close attention to strike, this series is poorly struck throughout. Try to find ones with as much detail possible in Liberty's head and left hand.

Thanks for the advise. I just picked up this one today. The picture doesn't show it but the top 1/3 of the obverse has a light cherry red tone.

Muddler, now that you mention it, I did notice that the left hand details on some of my S-walkers are weak. I will defiantly pay more attention to that in the future.

The two coins you have shown are great, I hope you can complete the short set with similar coins. My full set is in albums with au to ms my goal. Some of the earlier dates I will settle for xf with many that need replacement. It is a great design with fairly plentiful coins to choose from.

I agree, nice uncirculated Walkers are one of my favorite coins to look at. I consider myself to be "extremely" particular when choosing coins for my collection, if I was putting together the short set of Walkers in unc. grades I would go with slabbed coins also. I prefer coins that are untoned or very slightly at most, I also try to stay away from coins with dings that are located in the prime focal areas like the open areas around the main design areas. If dings are located in amongst the design they are harder to see at first glance, makes for better eye appeal in my opinion. When completing a set I would try to get all the coins to match as far as color, if at all possible, sometimes you just have to make exceptions though.

For now I suggest not being to fussy about grades. Just have fun trying to complete as many as possible.
