Last weekend I went and got all my Mercury dime Albums out of the safe deposit boxes. I picked up a few sort of nice coins that I thought might go into set #2 or #3 or something. Just looking at the 16D's in each Album I noticed the one in set #2 appeared to be scratched.

Note the scratch behind the Mercury's Head on the Obverse.
I never saw this before and sure it's always been there but just never noticed due to lighting or something. Also, note the sort of bump on her nose.
Now any suggestions as to any attempts to get rid of the scratch.
1. Try a Dremmel fine tipped brush to sort of smooth it out
2. Try a tooth pick and just rub to see if it flattens out a bit
3. Consider it damaged and move to a possible set #4 or #5 or higher. I have 12 Sets and 10 have those 16D's.
4. Put it aside in a 2x2 and just don't bother putting it in an Album
5. Leave it where it's at and forget the scratch and bump on nose.
Anyone got a better idea?

You have 12 sets of Mercury dimes, but only 10 of them have a 16-D. What's the problem, cheapo. :)

You know most people have at least 15 complete Mercury dime sets. I guess some people just can't keep up.

All are about the same as the one pictured. All were purchased at the same time, for the same price, at the same coin store. All were in a glass dish in the window priced at $1.50 each. It was all the money I had in the World. This was so long ago that gas for a car was about $0.23/gallon. What was sort of premium gas was $0.30/gal.
Sitting Liberty Dimes in change were common.

If you have others why not sell it and buy a coin you will like that doesn't have a scratch on it. You know from now on every time you look at that coin you will focus in on the scratch! 1916-Ds are so valuable that you will still get a good chunk of change for it.

I would put it on the window sash and let the air oxidize the scratch. Nice collection of mercs!

That look like its in a slab, are you sure that is not a scratch on the slab itself?

If I have 10 complete sets with 16-D's, then I would sell a few set to start a gold Indian set in MS-63 and above high grade coins.

Edit: Carl, Don't tell me you have a few of those set already!?

I have no slabs at all. I've purchased some coins in slabs in the past and always keep those little rubberised washer looking things the coins sit on. I've found many uses for those. Sitting a coin on them while taking a photo or just changing from one Album to another keeps the coin from sitting on a table. All my coins go into Albums or 2x2's or those plastic rolls.

I've been hoping to get a 16d Merc to complete my set for only... about 50 years. Yea, I know that money could solve this. Seriously - congrats on having so many! Would putting it in a microwave help?
