Hello all. I read the forum often and finally decided I need to get in on the action!

I recently decided to put together a Walking Liberty half set (as complete with highest grades I can afford).

I am torn whether or not to slowly accumulate the coins slabbed or buy them raw and place in a Dansco. I like the idea of the coins slabbed because I can keep them all in my bank deposit box, whereas the larger Dansco wouldn't fit. The thought of having the coins in tubes or 2x2's with pen written dates doesn't really do much for me.

This is largely preference but I'd love to hear other people have assembled their complete sets. Thank you!

I have been working (slowly) on my WLH set for a while now. I chose to go with raw examples to place in a Dansco. I was using a Dansco for my LWC set, then I switched to airtites and 2x2's but ultimately went with graded examples. It's all personal preference so I dabble on both sides.

I moved your post to the 'Classic US coins' forum where it should find more attention.

I would buy them raw and place in a Dansco, which is a personal preference. While a Dansco might not fit into your current SDB, it would fit in a larger one. Consider upgrading your SDB (the cost is a factor) before making a final decision. You may be happier with an album and a larger SDB.

Working on my Walker set currently....I am hoping for AU on the 1941 and up dates....and XF for the below 1941 dates. Also, I am buying raw and placing in my Dansco album. I just started about a month ago....and I have less than 10 coins currently. Most of the 1941 and up in AU condition will be around $20 each.

I completed my Franklin set last month....all in AU condition. It looks like this Walker set is going to be a nightmare compared to the Franklins! :)

Good Luck!

I have a Walker set that is incomplete missing the 16 s, 21 and 21 d. My collection is housed in two Whitman albums and is impressive especially the 41-47 album as most are ms quality. My goal is a complete set of xf or better. I prefer non slabbed coins so the set can be viewed as a whole and I have removed coins from slabs to put into my albums. If your goal is a resell option I would go towards slabbed coins as they will trend a better price. With 66 regular issues and 7 proof issues it will be cumbersome to view all of them if they are in slabs. If proofs are in your goals I would have them all in slabs.

Doing the same here...buying raw and I should be getting my Dansco in today. Have about 15 more halves to go to complete the set, hoping I can take care of a big chunk of that at a show this weekend.

JD, I may be one of the minorities on this forum, but I love slabs! I am building my 7070 type collection, going for quality over quantity. Only you can decide what is best for you as far as displaying and storage goes. I keep mine in the plastic Slab Boxes (may move them to the nicer wooden case (below)) for storage.

Great thoughts! Thanks for the input everyone. I'll give it some more thought and hopefully have pictures upon completion!

My walker set is close to completion.
It's a circulated set but as with all my collections I like to include some uncirculated examples mixed in so there is a bunch of AU and BU coins. The early dates can be pricey in higher grade but that should come as no surprise

twice for those that missed.
And here I go again bragging about Whitman Albums. And yes we all have been through this which is the best stuff. BUT, they do fit easily into a safe deposit box. I know since I have about 10 or more in each of my safe deposit boxes. The Danso Albums are a bit to tall but you could lay them in the box length wise but loose a lot of space. A Whitman fits really nice sideways allowing me to put a real lot in one box but sure gets heavy.
Presently have 5 and soon to start #6. As to grades you possibly could do as I do and start with whatever you can find and afford. Then as you find better ones, just upgrade the ones in your Album and use the ones coming out to start a set #2. And as you do this you find you'll end up with #3, #4 and on and on and on.
So far all my Walking Liberty's are in Whitman's but if I start #6, it will be a Dansco since I use what I get free and a Dansco is the latest free one.
I still think Silver coins look better in a Blue background. One thing I don't like about Dansco Albums is the poor planning on the amount of coins. By that I mean in almost all of them there is empty, unused slots at the end as if there is more of those type coming. Whitman Albums are made to hold all the coins for a series and no empty slots at the end.
