I've got another mint mark mystery (thanks for the help on my 1921S Buffalo!). I have a 1912 Liberty nickel in my collection that has a mint mark, but it is not clear which one. I've always assumed it was a D as that is the more conservative assumption. But it doesn't exactly fit either a D or an S. It has to be one of course, so could you give your opinions? Either way the back of the MM needs to be explained as neither have a structure that juts out the center of its back.

If it is a D, one possibility may be a repunched D. Here is a link to the only image I could find of one. Could it be that?

Definetly a D, it looks like some PMD or something got in there. You can see in the smaller picture where the hole is for the D

Funny how looking at the picture I posted makes the D more obvious than when the coin is in hand. PMD makes sense, but I'm still wondering about the base of the D as it looks like the repunched date in my link. May well be from PMD, but I want to fully explore the possibilities before finishing with it. Any thoughts on this is welcome.

I'm guessing it's a D also.
