Nothing is wider, so it's Machine Doubling. Also the profile of the bust has Machine Doubling as well. Still a nice coin from the year I graduated High School.

coop: Question: How did that happen the motto shifted to the left but the bust shifted the right or was the MD on the bust from another cause?

Proofs are struck more than once. So it could be die bounce/alignment not correct between the strikes. Not a die variety, just a striking issue.
