Image: CA.jpg92.91 KB Image: CAr.jpg96.68 KB Image: CAc.jpg91.4 KB was going to be the title of this, but I figured out the bad news on my own. This coin was won on the bay as an unc looking coin which it appears at first glance. Upon inspection, it looks as if it was cleaned. This is a good looking coin and the price was very good, I think I want to keep it. How much is a cleaned coin like this worth? It's got good eye appeal. Would you keep it? Thanks for your responses. What about the seller? What about feedback?

Ive seen worse examples !!
I agree that the coin has been abrasively cleaned,,
MS cleaned net EF-40 in my opinion.
I personaly do not like cleaned coins, but if the price was extremely right I would consider it due to the price of these in the higher MS grades.
you can take about 75% off the value of a similar grade coin for a harshly cleaned example,, making this one about a 45 to 50 dollar coin.
I think that you find the Guys and girls who frequent this forum are pretty sharp,, you may not get a large number of responses but the ones you get will be quality opinions.

It is a good looking coin and IF the price is right, I'd definitely keep it. But it does depend on if you wanted an Uncirculated coin.
The cleaning scratches are apparent in the photos and does lower the grade of the coin to well below uncirculated, in my opinion. Did the seller advertising this as Uncirculated? Or was the wording "an Unc looking coin"...whatever that phrase means. I would write to the seller first, if you are unhappy with the coin or the purchase price, and let him know. He may offer a refund or you can suggest a reduced price to make you happy and him to avoid a negitive feedback.

Like Rick and toast said If the price is right, Its a commerative and not the most common either so inmy opionin as long as you didnt over pay it's worth Having. At only 86,394 Made it may have a shot . As FAr as Grade Definitly MS-60-62 Maybe , But would have to takea net loss for the claning That part is hard to estimate metalman is proably right Ef The Coin Should read in a holder MS-60ish, Harshly Cleaned

I paid 80 something for it, which seemed like a good price on ebay. Most Circulated halves go for more on eaby. I don't see any California's on ebay go for less than 80. toast: I reread the auction and it appears he is selling an unc peice, which it is not, but If this is a good price for this coin, I will leave it alone. I am not a dealer and don't buy wholesale but this seems like a good deal (from what I've seen on ebay anyway) A certified uncirculated on ebay goes for quite a bit more I'd say. I'm am thinking about emailing him. What about ebay feedback if I keep it, which would have to be positive, just cause. ebay is where I buy My coins from and error coins are easier to buy on ebay that this old silver stuff. I did buy 2 certified MS commens OR and San Diego off of ebay and those are the coins which surfaces I compared to this cleaned one. Big Difference. Here is the auction I won: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...38&rd=1&rd=1the photo is horrible... which is a whole other discussion ...... On ebay I buy many, many coins from horrible photographs. The price IS ALWAYS lower and most of the time you get a GREAT DEAL. As a photographer, I know many people can't take photographs and even more no Nothing about color managemnet. All good deals for me, (Mostly) . Peace out

I think its a reasonable deal In my old 2003 Red Book they list AU-50 at 100.00 . I think the person selling it made out and you did as well, as long as the coin was descibed correctly in the auction

now see looking at the auction itself and The photos provided and the description I say the coin was not properly described , and the seller should honor your money back if desired, that is my opioin keep in mind I do not know much about the ebay realm or the like

I realize that, but I also know that this was on ebay and not certified, so.....that (the false description) I can live with if this is a decent price on this coin. I know I will most likely upgrade to a certified example, but that my be a while. I beleive If I resold this coin on ebay as an unc cleand coin, it would go for more than 80 bucks with a good photo.

ok here's what started it,, http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...10&rd=1&rd=1I bought this awesome coin for the "Rotated Reverse" which is awesome in itself and this is the coin I compared surfaces with to Know the other was cleaned...cool to learn stuff on your own. Anyway this and another rotated reverse San Diego certified coin ms PCGS MS65 started me off into the old commens I guess to go along with my new commens. This Oregon Coin is awesome and if the seller had "Hyped" the Rotated Reverse which is quite common on this coin but nontheless Mentioning that and starting the coin at 99 cents..it woulda gone a lot higher imo. a very nice coin ...another rotated reverse for my collection. So being from CA and all I had to have a Ca coin but hard to find one rotated and this price seem Awesome for a UNC (NOT) but figured it could have been cleaned being on ebay and all so I bid on it....

That last was a Heritage auction - all the hype they need is their name. I agree wholeheartedly with your idea of cherrypicking nice ones from poor photos - I'm building a decent VAM collection that way.

Not to me you wouldn't But I suppose there are some who would pay more for it. Although it is a fairly low mintage it is not exactly rare, nor all that expensive up to MS-63 even in 65 its not out of reach. Rick

I don't agree that the obverse is Unc. Looks like someone was trying to scrub some life back into the the shoulder and elbow area, both of which appear to me to be high points.
BTW, uncirculated looking sounds like an old phrase with a new bow on it. LU--Looks Uncirculated. That showed up in the 70's and, fortunately, was summarily executed.
