I guess I would try an acetone bath and see if that helps..

Tar will probably come off, corrosion will not. Some nickels turn brown over time, especially if they were in the ground for a while (e.g. found while metal detecting). Try the acetone and if it doesn't come off there probably isn't much you can do.

In all honesty I hate cleaning coins!
This is only a 1916. I found one in XF condition in a roll. They are a pretty cheap coin. I would probably just buy a new one. But thats just me.
I never suggest cleaning on any coin, no matter what
