Quote: Prices in that 1st edition, 1947, are rather on the funny side. Those prices would have to be multiplied by 6.5 to break even with the official inflation rate. Multiplied by 21.62 to equal a five percent per annum which would have been pretty easy to achieve over that time period. Or multiplied by 71 to reflect a 7% return which would be considered a good return on investment Quote:1909-S VDB LWC will be next when I can find my desk. Feel free to guess or request in the meanwhile. 1963 CDN has it at $115 in VG and $135 in Fine. By 1988 they had increased to $230 and $240 respectively. That's 3% per annum growth for the VG and a little over 2% for the Fine. The VG just barely kept up with inflation the Fine actually lost value. In UNC it went from $280 to $375, a 1.5% growth rate. That's a $194 loss compared to inflation. Buying key dates in high grades does not always guarantee a good return. For the SVDB you would have done better to have bought Goods than Uncs.

That's because it has a wide collector base, as opposed to large investor interest.

I like to look through old books at prices. I got one of my favorite books back from my ex-wife. It is called Coin collectors' Handbook copy right date 1954 revised in 1956 4th edition. Here you go; 1916-d Mercury dime in Good-very good lists at $12.00 and $150.00 in uncirculated. Too bad I was born in 1968. Doh!

1916 SLQ Good $150 Fine $225
Common dates were $0.35/$0.40* The * indicates items they would not buy, but recommended holding on to.
Considering it had been 34+ years since they were made, this is a realistic collector value for a typical old quarter, and should be kept in mind when talking about "collector value" of common silver coins.

The 17I listed at 50¢ in good, another example of the "collector" value of a 50 year old coin.

How about the 1916 double die or the 1937 three legged buffalo?
The 16/16 apparently hadn't been found yet, but the 1918/7-D was $60 in good, $150 in fine.
The crip was $12.50 and $20.00
Neither fantasy coin (1804 dollar or 1913 V) was listed.
