Now I am sure this has been brought up before on this forum, but for my benefit, not being a nickel collector, please tell me why the 1982-P is given a higher value than other earlier(1960's and 70's)nickels with lower mintages? I am getting my prices from the NumisMedia site, if that makes any difference. I mean, the price goes from .24 in Good to around $2.00 in AU! Even the 2008-P has a lower mintage than the 1982-P. What's the deal? Thanks.

The price guide is silly. A 1982 nickel is worth 5 cents in circulated grades.

Simple explanation- no mint Sets were issued in 1982 and 1983 and there was apparently very little saving of bags and rolls as well. Since most of the mintages went directly into circulation, this has led to the 1982 and 1983 non-cent coins having a hefty premium in MS grades and even a modest premium in AU grades.

with biokemist. You will see the same thing for these years with the prices of Washington quarters. These are called a condition rarity. Yes they are a common coin, but they are less common in higher grades because no mint sets were made. So if you see these dates spend them because there is nothing special... But if they look like a higher grade then you can save them if you'd like.

Thanks for the explanations, I'm not a collector of mint sets either so I didn't realize that they didn't make them in those years. So basically, the only ones worth a bit more than face are the unc's.

Nice attractive XF and AU '82/ '83 issues can bring substantial premiums. This especially applies to the quarters.

For them to be worth keeping, they need to be AU minimum
