Hi All,

I'm new to the forum and have only ever considered coins as something to make a purchase with. As your the experts I though I would try a pose a few questions to you.

A friend gave me a 1971 Kennedy half dollar that seems to be gold plated but lacks the reeding typically found on the edge of a coin. There is no letter after the date so I have no idea where it was minted. One last identifier, the "s" in Trust seems to be malformed. It's kinda lop sided with the upper portion of the S extending to the right and sort of filled in.

Is there anything you can tell me about the coin? Is it real? Is it worth at least 50 cents?

Thanks in advance for you time and your help.

Various third parties over the years have sold gold-plated half dollars. They're only worth 50 cents and are considered damaged by collectors because they didn't come from the mint that way. The lack of reeding is from heavy circulation or from use in a casino, probably before it got plated.

Yep, worth about 50 cents and that's it.

Incidentally, a 1971-dated coin with no mintmark would have been minted in Philadelphia, as their coins (with a few exceptions such as silver nickels from 1942-1945) did not begin carrying mintmarks until 1980.
