Hello everyone, I am just wondering if it's okay to clean modern silver bullion coins? Because I bought 10 1Oz silver Maples and I want to store them in a coin case I have- I can't get any plastic capsules, so is it okay to just let them get exposed to tarnishing? Therefore, I'm wondering if any coin cleaner will do if I need to clean them. Thank you very much! InvestorDom

Even if it's just bullion, you can still harm the silver altering the weight and amount of silver you have...

Yeah, the general consensus is to never clean any coin. Bullion Silver Coins you maybe could get away with it. Let's be honest, it's bullion, it's not really numismatics. The value is based on it's silver content and people will usually prefer to have their purchases look nice. Two comments...I don't think your coins will tarnish to a point of ugliness unless you purposefully neglect them for a long time so this might all be a moot point. As far as cleaning altering the weight of a coin....You don't have to harshly clean it, you could just dip it or something. Like I said I would never advise to clean any numismatic coin at all, circulating or proof. I personally believe that as far as bullion goes, unlike coins for collections, that a nicely cleaned piece is worth more than an ugly piece. A Maple or ASE will still demand a slight premium over spot if cleaned. An ugly one would likely just go for spot and be a tougher sell.

Canadian silver coins have a tendency to form milk spots. I don't know if there is any way to prevent that, but tarnishing can be prevented/slowed with tarnish strips in the same place you keep your coins. You might also want to keep the maples in airtites. Typically there is a premium over spot on these coins, but when you clean them people will offer spot or less. You want to preserve that premium if the cost of preserving the premium is less than the premium itself. Costs decrease as silver coins increase.

If you can't obtain capsules or Air-Tites in NZL, next best thing is to use 2x2 or even the 2x2 storage envelopes. Non circulating silver coins should not be exposed to the environment, as they can tone unevenly or with unattractive streaks. If you live near a coin dealer, I'm certain they can order the Lighthouse capsules from the NZL licensed distributor. I would never buy PM and just toss them around the house with no form of protection. It's almost like saying what's the point?
Also putting them in 2x2s or other coin holders will at least force you to organize them and not just have a handful of spotted coins. Keeping them clean will at the very least convince your future buyer that they are the real thing, and that you took care of your investment, bullion as they may be. They will be easier to sell. I've known of people who got under spot on their 'ugly' ASEs because they didn't care & it was a buyers market.

Send them to me and I will take care of them for you :-)
Seriously, don't clean them and store them like others have said, but do store them in a cool dry place. The less humidity the better. Who knows in 20-30 years they may be worth alot more than you paid and have some nuministic value.

Everyone is just being to carefull. I suggest you just dip them in a strong acid for seveal days every month or so to keep contaminates off them. Then using a brass wire wheel, brush them on both sides at high RPM's. Using an occational Butane torch will keep moisture off them too. Hopefully you realize none of the above is serious. DO NOT CLEAN COINS. Store them in anything that protects them from the invironment.

They're bullion, not numismatic. So I don't really see the point in cleaning them. Just leave them and enjoy the "rustic" look:)

Thanks for all the helpful information regarding cleaning coins. I was going to start a new post regarding wiping Morgan dollars with a soft cloth. But, I now get the point: Do not clean the coins at all. Thanks!
