I'm trying to figure out the best way to take photos of my coins with what I have and it isn't much. I can't afford to buy any high or even low end cameras or lamps specialized for coins at all. I would welcome any advice for a low dollar task.

What I did was cut up a small cardboard box to use as a stand for a cheap USB webcam. I have the webcam sitting on top with a hole for the lens and the sides are cut away for light to get in.

This is a badly damaged coin. It was also cleaned but I stopped because it was already greatly improved compared to before the cleaning process. Some of the corrosion and black stuff on the coin would damage it more if I removed it.

Rest in Peace

Not bad for your first coin pic. I think your set-up sounds pretty clever. It is a dark coin and so more light would help. Try the same set-up with a brighter coin and see what that looks like. Good luck.

Ok, here is a shot of a Roosevelt silver dime, 1950. This one didn't turn out too well though. I used the same method on this coin. I am also using Paint Shop Pro 9. The only thing I have done is to crop out some of the background and merge them into one image. I figured that I would try to get the best photo possible without altering the cosmetic look of the coin, as much as possible.

guess my last post didn't load,, there seems to be alot of purple tint in your pictures, not sure why...good shots with what your using...if can check out some pawn shops look for an older Canon with the DIAL on top...$25 to 50 bucks...you want a camera that has manual control and not the point and shoot type...THE DIAL is the key...it allows manual control over the camera...

I do realize I need a better camera. Although, with this cheap cam, I do have a manual focus that helps a little bit. Eventually, when I get some money I will start looking around for a better camera.
