Hi everyone... I have a difficult time determining grades in the upper grades of raw Walking Liberty halves, so I decided to purchase a PCGS MS63 or 64 WLH to have as a reference. I am finding very little price difference (if any) between PCGS MS63 or 64, but a huge jump between MS64 and 65... is this normal? And I am seeing a lot of coins with tiny marks on them (although these marks maybe on the holder?) I'm finding that tiny marks especially stand out on WLH with the large clear fields. My biggest question on these is this: Can I expect a MS64 WLH to be well struck example automatically because of the grade, or is this something I have to look for coin to coin? Besides unsightly toning or bothersome marks, is there anything else I need to look for when purchasing a MS PCGS graded WLH? Thanks!

The grade is very much not a guarantee of a good strike. There are lots of high grade WLHs out there with no detail at all in the center hand area. I spent a couple months looking for a type example with fully-struck details and ended up getting a reasonable deal on a 1942 graded at PCGS MS64 with most of the hand detail there, but I'm not completely satisfied. I might just break down and get a proof rather than trying to dig up a fully struck circulation strike.

Merclover, that 1941 is sure better than anything we have. I too want to start on this collection, we inherited an incomplete collection and was shocked at how quickly the prices went up. From what I have read there are many, many more graded 61 to 64, after that there are far fewer in the high grades. I don't think we have any coin in this series over AU50. It will just take us selling some others to get to the higher grades. Good luck with the collection, please keep posting pictures so I can feel even more inferior about our set, LOL.

The reverse is particularly attractive with great feathers on the breast and legs. As per usual the left hand is seemingly missing on liberty. Some one had mentioned going to a proof for better strike detail but your 1941 has a better reverse than my PR 64.

Ms64s can vary so be picky when choosing. Also check out ngc coins too.

Well, the good news is that I decided to go ahead and purchase this coin. I looked at a lot of WLHs and felt this one was the nicest one in its price range, and I am happy with it. I'll have a 14 day no questions asked return period, so we'll see. The only question I have regarding it is a tiny dark speck I see on the bottom part of the flag, but we'll see. It's PCGS graded MS64. Thanks for the help everyone! I appreciate it very much!

really nicely struck coin. I agree the upper levels like ms-66's are incredible and pricey! I have seen lots of them over the past 20+ years.

Quote: I am finding very little price difference (if any) between PCGS MS63 or 64, but a huge jump between MS64 and 65... is this normal As common with most coins, 63's and 64's are considerably easier (and more affordable) to find than the jump to 65. PCGS population report shows that of the original mintages only .1% have been graded MS65. Maybe long term 65's would be nice but I am unable to tell the difference; I'd rather buy a couple white 64's for teh price of one 65
