I typically only buy mint sets to break them out and fill my Dansco books. I think the last one I bought was in 2002. Now that I'm trying to fill my new Kennedy Book I started buying newer sets and picked up a rather overpriced $40 2008 set. It hasn't arrived yet- and I'm aware it has a unique finish- question is...

would you break it up to fill your Dansco book- or do you consider these editions so different from business strikes that they are not BU?

Thanks...

they are simply satin finish. If you need them to fill holes, go for it. No other reason to do so though.

2008 Mint Sets :

Contain a P&D version of the LAST Lincoln Memorial cent design.
End of an era there.

They also have the last year of the Sacagawea dollar coin.
After that year they changed the design, which will be different each year now, and is now called the Native Dollar.

The Satin Finish coins started in 2005, so this was already in place by 2008.

But deserving of double the original U.S. Mint issue price ?
Some would say no..... some yes.
I bought TWO Sets that year (it's what I do EVERY year though). One to break up for the Dansco's, and one to keep for "whatever" in the future.
I do the same with the yearly Proof Sets, and the yearly Silver Proof Sets.

GOTTA FILL UP THEM HOLES IN THE DANSCO'S.....

As far as this one.....

This has been mentioned A LOT on CCF over the years.
First of all, BOTH Satin Finish and Business Strikes CAN BE/ARE B.U. (brilliant uncirculated)
That is just a "condition" sometimes also called "Gem Uncirculated". Referring to really nice quality ~ free from many imperfections. The Satin Finish coins certainly fall into this category.
Really it just boils down to your own wishes and intents as far as what you want to do.
There is no debate that the Satin Finish IS a different coin than the Business Strikes.
Dansco, (and I think most others too) does NOT recognize the difference with extra holes in their albums....but some folks, including me in part, have just bought extra pages to accommodate for this.

And don't forget this year of 2011 IS NOT SATIN FINISH any longer ! So now.....we're back to normal again !
The "Satin Finish" just really made things more difficult for album people, I was not a big fan for that reason, mainly.

thanks for the great response eaglefoot.

I'm certainly not your typical collector. I've had about three period of collecting- followed by lulls of inactivity. The last time I bought mint sets and proof sets was in 2002. Back then I would break them out to fill holes or if they were especially nice, would put them away for possible grading.

I've always used my Dansco books as a route to display the nearly best examples of coins I had (if I had a high quality PCGS graded coin in slab).

The reason I would break up this set is to fill holes, obviously- but at the inflated prices this set is going for, I can't justify buying another...

so if you only had one set... would you break it up? or would you buy raw Kennedy's and Washington quarters to fill your albums?

I would break it to fill my Dansco needs.....
Since this is your collecting style (building albums), doing this "fits the bill", in my opinion.
You can always go out and buy another Set to keep "intact" in the future if you like. I doubt the price will continue to rise on this Set....but you never know.

I agree with eaglefoot! I would break them open to fill your Dansco.
