I've bought from asyn before and he's very reliable. Many coins sell cheap which begs the question again: if you can routinely purchase coins very economically on ebay why are trends prices still so high? Aren't they supposed to reflect platforms like ebay?

I now routinely use a formula called "Trends / 2"...
The only time I try to sell AT trends is with an extremely rare key...probably why none of them are selling ;)

Trends is out to lunch. CCN told me they don't go by what happens on ebay. So what do they base their prices on ?

Funny thing though! Before the 2006 P Non magnetics sold on ebay I was told that ebay sales were factored in to determine trends. While those coins were being sold I was told ebay sales were not a factor for setting trends. Do they rely on private dealers for realised prices or do they only use Major Auctions? Can anyone explain this please!

Trends are determined by prices received by major dealers and by results of major auctions.I have it from the horses mouth(so to speak)that ebay sales are not accounted for and avoided by Trends, but some ebay sales of ICCS coins by major dealers may be included in their replies to the trends editors.

So who cares what trends say's about the 2006P zinc penny, we know what they sell for in the real world.

I think that trends are an artificial contruct that is created through tacit collusion among all those with a vested interest in high trend values.... The dealers with lots of inventory. The publications like CCN who take ads from the dealers. The auctions houses that earn commissions off of high values. High catalogue/trend values eventually will destroy the reputations of the publishers. In the stamp world, catalogue values are now a joke. They are probably 10x market. For common coins, ebay is the market. For high grade coins, dealers and auctions are still the market. It is time for trends to realize that there are two markets and prices should reflect it. There are entities out there that trap and record ebay auction prices. If that data was collated and published for general consumption, it would eliminate trends and maybe Charlton from the market. The internet has not yet disintermediated the market for coin price data. I suspect it is just about time for that to happen.

Trends continue to provoke discussion. I buy a lot and I sell a lot. I do have a hard time selling most coins above 50% of trends. This becomes a problem when I'm dealing with a private collector and I try to explain to him why I'm offering what I am. Meanwhile he has the latest copy of CCN beside him.

The ASHRAP Report was pretty good that way, at least with certified coins... I think the data is still being collected, but not published for recent data...

You are all in luck, now is the time to air your beefs about TRENDS and CCN. The latest edition has just arrived on my doorstep and guess what Bret Evans commentary is about, and I quote, " CCN seeks input to help shape TRENDS" unquote.
I have already sent him my 2 cents worth, now it is your turn....

In the past I have bought multiple items from asyn and haven't had any problems with him, other than what you have already said about just need to grade a bit lower. Yet however I recently bought a coin from him and after four weeks it had not arrived. I e-mailed him and got back to me right away saying he would notify they accounting department. Four days later still nothing so I asked again if a refund was coming. Again replied promptly and said they would deal with it as soon as possible. After a week from when I sent my original e-mail I said that if a refund was not given in two days I would have to take the matter to paypal as it does not seem like things are getting done. Right after that e-mail a refund was given, but he has not blocked me from any of his future auctions. I have tried contacting him to resolve the matter, but no response. So if you ever have an item that doesn't arrive from asyn now that you will not receive a refund quickly and if you even push for it you will be blocked from bidding. The thing now is for leaving feedback do I leave negative or neutral feedback.

Your call on the feedback of course Gowan. Personally I would leave neutral feedback in that situation as you did eventually receive your refund. If you don't want to be blocked as a buyer then it is in your interest to avoid leaving negative. However, you must decide how you feel about the whole scenario.

I bought quite a few coins from him recently, I noticed his stamps were all from past years, he must have collected coins and stamps in the past years and then sell the coins using stamp for free shipping

I don't collect stamps, but I have noticed the stamps on the packages from ASYN are always fancy. I guess he might be using some of the low value stamps from the collections he's bought.
