My son went into the bank to get a pack of 50 $1 bills. He usually buys rolls of coins but he wanted to try ones today. 5 minutes down the road, he starts screaming about finding a silver certificate! Sure, enough, there was a 1957 silver certificate in his pack. Isn't this pretty unusual?

Sure it is unusual, not horribly impossible, it happens. I would be looking very cosely at other bills in the pack for Barr dollars and star notes and fancy serial numbers.

I used to come across a silver certificate once in awhile when I was a kid --- but that was a looooong time ago. LOL I would have thought it impossible these days. I'm very happy for him. Now he needs to go buy the plastic sleeves to store paper money. LOL

Barr?...Star?...Fancy?...so much to learn! We went through the stack again and did find two bills with serial numbers that were A235179447A and A235179450A...so that was pretty neat. He loves that silver certificate though so yes, we will definitely be picking up a protector for it.

Well, you can look all that stuff up but Barr notes are signed Barr -- very short time at the job and therefore a little scarce, and Star notes have an * in the serial number.

I doubt that a silver certificate was circulating all these decades, so I think someboy cleaned out a drawer for an elderly relative and didn't know why the bills were saved. Which is a shame, but a bit of luck for your son! Yea! At least it was found by somebody who cares and now it will have a good home.

OH NO! 458,880,000? Well, I know where five of them are. LOL They are the only five I have ever come across -- so they're living with my collection.

Seriously, I had no idea there were so many printed.
