Hello everyone, new here so please bear with me.
I have a 1911 Royal Mint gold sovereign with a strange marking on the obverse. The marking is raised as if it were part of the die used to create the coin. It is situated vertically behind the bust, rather large and is comprised of three characters. either M_M or W_W depending on how you view it. The center character while clearly struck is unidentifiable and may be two characters instead of one. I have clear pictures if this would help and verification that the coin is indeed a gold sovereign.
Please help if you can.
I have spent many hours trying to identify this and believe it to be a rarity.
Thank you

I believe it says "M 21 M", with the "21" in Arabic numerals. It is a MIddle-Eastern jewellery replica, presumably made of 21k gold.

Thanks for the interest.
Weight: 7.98 grams on my pocket scale
Diameter: is the same as all my other sovereigns so 22mm
If it helps at all this was part of a small lot I bought from a lady who had gathered them while living in Cairo.
One has a 21K bank puriy stamp, another is from Perth and one from the Pretoria Mint SA.
Here is a shot of the flip side.

Thanks SAP, that makes sense considering where I obtained it.
So this is considered a round and not a coin since it is not legal tender from a Government mint?
And not at all rare either.
My hopes are shattered

"Rounds" generally don't imitate the weight, size and fineness of genuine coin designs. It would be considered a "replica". Without the jeweller's mark, it would be considered a "counterfeit".

Thanks for your help yu may have saved my sanity, good thing I got it for spot as it seems to be worth only it's weight in gold.
I have to say though, it seems like a lot of effort and cost to make a replica and then to mar it's appearance with such a large mark for use in jewlery.
Genuine sovereigns are not THAT rare.
