Looking for opinions on the future potential investment of Chinese Pandas. I have a few people telling me its a really good numismatic investment. But I am not sold on the idea yet.

Like any other bullion coins. Spot +/- a %age. Buy if you like it, sell if you need the cash.

I like to collect Pandas quite a bit. Most of the time they are not to hard to find for just over spot (or at least I could a year ago someone bought up all the ones in my area), and some of them can bring a large premium. You can do especially well if you take the time to find nice coins and then get them graded. Check e-bay and see what some of the rarer dates sell for, like a 2000 silver mirrored or even a 2000 frosted coin can do very well. If you have access to them at a decent price and trust your dealer I would buy as many as you can find of Pandas before 2010.

If you want an investment just as silver, there are cheaper ways to do it. But you mention 'numismatic investment' which implies that you'd expect a premium over the silver value.

I'd be very hesitant to invest in Chinese pandas for a few reasons. The biggest is that there are numerous counterfeits available. Considering it is a coin you are not familiar with, in a language (I presume) you do not understand, you will be more likely to be fooled.

But mostly I'd say don't invest/speculate in anything you don't understand. And I don't understand the finer details of the panda market. There's a lot of people trying to make money with pandas, and to me that means a lot of people will lose money.

I think so too. I'm almost afraid to buy anything anymore since it may be from China.

There's a statement I can get behind. I don't understand a lot of the modern bullion issues like Pandas that were minted in limited quantities that sell for many times their issue price and/or PM value. Prices wouldn't be so high if there wasn't a demand but I strongly suspect that demand is based on speculation & that could collapse at any time. Too scary for me.

Let me know where you can buy panda coins at a reasonable premium. If it's around spot, I can buy and sell it easily at a profit because demand is too ridiculous at the moment.

That said, if you don't know what you are buying, you are better off by passing as you might end up buying counterfeits.

I buy a couple of silver 1 oz'ers every year from reputable PM dealers that are originally sealed as issued by the Chinese mint. As mentioned previously the mintages are extremely limited, and there is extensive counterfeiting of these coins in China itself. This is one modern coin type that I would definitely buy graded and authenticated by a reputable TPG, particularly the gold coins. Not worth taking a chance as the fakes are very, very convincing with the correct weights and finenesses. This is one series a collector needs to know as much s/he can before buying and selling. Not for the faint of heart or the casual collector looking in the secondary market.
