OK so I've sorted them all into years. Now I'm stuck.
Two questions.
Firstly, after sorting them my hands were black so is it OK to wash them in gentle detergent or is any form of cleaning strictly forbidden?
Secondly apart from the 1930 and 1925, is there anything in particular I should look for first/quickly in your opinions?

Many thanks.

Look out for the 1925/46 penny and 1915/30/31 half penny. If you see any pennies or half pennies pre-1936 i'd put them aside. Clean your hands then dry them and continue sorting, don't clean the coins.

Yes, wash your hands and not the coins. You could wear cotton gloves whilst sorting or even powder-free latex gloves if it's really bad.

I would pick out ANY penny or half penny in EF condition or better, of George V1,
and the same for George V in VF or better.

When I am looking through coins I always use latex gloves, coins are dirty things and will leave your hands black and green. Better on the gloves than me :)
Cleaning coins with chemical products like washing liquid is bad, it will remove all the patina that makes a coin like a penny turn dark brown, removing the patina means removing the value.
Anyways there is no harm soaking them in water and gently patting them dry, don't rub them as you will scratch the surface of the coin.
With rally nasty pennies that are black and have green Verdigris growing on them I soak them for a few seconds maybe minutes, in vinegar watered down. Then rinse in water and pat dry. The gunk will be removed but you may have removed some patina too... no worries tho as I put them outside in the elements and in a month the patina has covered the coin again.

Pennies to look for, well you may not have the hard ones like 1930, 1925 and 1920's pennies.
But interesting pennies that you may get...

Thanks guys.
In the Aust pennys I have all the years from 1911 to 1964 inclusive, except these: 1913, 1914, 1918, 1925, 1926, 1930, 1931, 1932 & 1954 (Were there any made in 1954 anyway?) So I should look at the 14's, 20's, 33/32's and 46's to start, then look for VF+ of G.V and EF+ for G.VI. OK, will do

With the Aust half pennys I have: 13, 14, 16, 17, 18, 19, 21, 22, 26, 27, 29, 32, 33, 35, 36, 38, 41, 42, 43, 46, 47, 48, 49, 50, 51, 53, 54, 55, 59, 60, 61, 63 & 64 - No 1915's

I also found some British ones. In Pennys: 1854, 1879, 1901, 1910, 1915, 1917, 1929, 1935 & 1936 and in Half Pennys 1945's & 1964's

Oh and a 43 and a 59 NZ penny.

So the gloves are on (not off! ha ha ha). I will let you know know if I find anything interesting. I promise I won't wash them. They range from a coppery red through the browns to one that is almost black. Only one has the green stuff on it.

Thankyou all again

Be sure to keep it away from the rest as it can spread.
