gVF looks like tape residue. This will set you back about 2-5 grand. If genuine it is a nice coin. My advice is to get this checked out before you lay your money on the table. There are some dodgy buggers out there in cyberspace

Would $2,000 be a good deal if confirmed genuine?

A large proportion of the total production of 1923 halfpennies show at least some evidence of die cracking. A significant minority of them do not.
There is no evidence of ANY die cracking here. The absence of die cracks is NOT a good indicator for the detection of fakes, but die cracking is the first thing I look for with these coins.
I suspect that poor die hardening MAY have been the reason why most half pennies produced in 1923 were struck with 1922 dies.
trout1105 is right. Get it checked if you can.

I hope Latman100 chimes in...he has a good eye for these scarcer predecimals.

Quote: There is no evidence of ANY die cracking here Actually, a faint die crack is visible in between all the date digits on the bottom picture. I've had a close look at my 1923, (which has multiple die cracks on both sides) and this one looks genuine to me. The cracks on this one, although fainter, compare very closely to my coin. Re $2000 price, I would try to get a reduction due to the 'goop', but if the seller won't budge, I say go for it.

aarong, it depends what you want the coin for.
If it is purely for an investment then I would steer clear of it. That mark next to the Kings head may make any future sale problematic.
If you just want it as a nice high grade 1923 Half Penny to add to your collection and gaze at admiringly then this would be a good buy.
