From my understanding there are three "transitional" design varieties for the 1964 Quarter reverse. They are A, B, and C. I can't seem to find a great deal of reliable information on the internet, and you all have been my go to guys. I have a regular circulated '64 D quarter, and I'm wondering which variety it is.

Also, I noticed an oddity in the mintmark, it looks to me like a double strike? I was wondering if anybody had any opinions on this as well.

As always, thanks.

Regular 1964 quarters have the type "A" reverse.

The type "B" were retired proofs and used on some the 1964 Philly quarters.

The type "C" are the Denver quarters that the 1965 reverse was started early. These are fresh dies with notable devices.

So checking a proof reverse quarter would show you what a type "B" reverse would look like, but it is a business strike coin that has the retired proof reverse.
On the 1964-D Type C, you would look at a 1965 quarter and it will show you what the type "C" would look like.
If the reverse isn't a B or C, then it is a type A.
Hope this helps?

It does! The only image I had been able to find of a type C was that grainy first one, thank you as always. Looks like an average A reverse. Still a funny mintmark though. Either way, it's always fun to find a pre 1965 Quarter in pocket change.

Machine Doubling on the mint mark. It's not a RPM.
