What is the "damage" on this coin? It is a true rarity showing great eye appeal and completely out of my rage, but nice to see.

I only see some stray marks and a couple spots around "CA" in AMERICA. Minor in my opinion, but enough for PCGS to "Genuine" it apparently.

I don't have any experience as a customer with PCGS but I know that they grade coins with scratches. I have one of them. So I am wondering: could there be something funny about the rim? Would they slab a coin with rim damage?
I guess what I really want to know is: Did the customer who submitted it to PCGS get an explanation better than just 'damage'?

Quote: I thought the damage would detract from the price It has, that is probably an AU coin but its current bid is at the Fine level. Numismedia lists EF40@ $58000, AU50@ $78000, and MS60@ $177,000.

looks like the obverse fields may have been tooled, other than that, I dont see what the damage is ? other than the damage that a coin like that would do to a budget

My first thought was the rim dings as well.......and they only made abt 3600 of those.........what a beauty, damage or not

I think a details grade this slight, will make little to no difference in value.

I am having trouble figuring out what they considered damaged. My guess would be that there might be something going on behind Liberty as the fields seem like they have a slightly different texture than the rest of the fields.

I'm not seeing any obvious 'damage' ... I see a tremendous lovely coin that any of us would enjoy in our collections. For sure there is something going on there for PCGS to holder it as such ... whoever wins it please let us know. David

I'm guessing the reverse is tooled, but that is one beautiful coin. I would be happy to have this in my collection. Edit - that is what bugs me about the TPG's - they wave their wand and pronounce their opinion with out indicating what they saw. Try and call them and it is a joke - been there, done that.

That's good to know, CoinsKelly. It isn't exactly cheap to get a coin graded and I guess I would want to know a little more information than they provide.
Thank goodness I could probably get that here.
