Today, while in a hurry, I cashed my check at a local store... When I get home, I came upon this bill. It has no watermark or strip, and the paper is patchy at best. The ink is dull and not even present at some spots. I need help as to what I should do... Here are some closeups of this god-aweful concoction, I've never came across anything like this before and I need a little guidance... And by the way, the colors are very accurate as to how they actually appear in person as well as what looks like blurry spots is the bill itself, I'm kicking myself right now for being so stupid...

Look up your local Secret Service Field office, call or stop in. Make sure you annotate where you got it, and all the details you can think of in the event it is fake. They will look at it for you and tell you if its fake or not. The downside: if it is fake, they won't be handing it back to you.

You could go back to the store and try to get it replaced with a real note, good luck with that. If you call the police they will take it and you loose out. John1

So if this is a lose/ lose situation, would I be in the wrong to keep it as a piece of curiosity? And does everyone agree that this is a counterfeit?

I would turn it back in to the store. But only if they themselves turn it in to the police. That way I'd get the $10 and hopefully some bad guy counterfeiters will be caught.

Looks fake to me, but I am not an expert by any means. I would turn it in. After all, its only ten bucks.

I got a whole pile of those my employees have taken over the years, that is not only fake but a really bad one at that. Your just out $10 and I wouldn't recommend trying to pass it off either to get your money back.

Carry a counterfeit marking pen if you are concerned. They can be bought for a few dollars.

I apologize for the heretic rant, it was just upsetting to think that the person I talked to was not worried in the slightest... Of course they have bigger fish to fry, but you have to catch a fish first to fry it right?... Just a thought...

I'm really skeptical of those counterfeit pens. They just have iodine in them, and turn black when in contact with starch. I think any counterfeiter worth his salt would notice that every grocery store uses them and acquire some starch-free linen to print their stuff on. The threads, strips, color-changing ink and micro-printing are all harder to fake and don't require any extra product to check.

When the good guys stop going after the bad guys, the bad guys win. Sad to hear.

Can you post pics of both full sides of the note? I am seeing way too much ink bleed to believe it is genuine.
