I am no expert in these matters, but I would assume that the Secret Service is busy looking for the printing press that's cranking these out. All they could do at a store is interogate and scare a store clerk or store owner and neither of them may be aware of what they have done.
If they seem less than interested in your call, it is probably because they have had dozens of calls from the same area - in which case I'll bet somebody's watching ....
Somebody is making these and selling them in order to circulate them or they are circulating the bills themselves and the Secret Service wants to find the printing press which might not even be in this counrty.
My guess is that the money is getting laundered through that shop and that you are not the first to report it.

The ink runs, so it is more than likely fake. On the down side, it has Tim Geithner's name on it so it is only worth $5 if it is real.

Quote: So if this is a lose/ lose situation, would I be in the wrong to keep it as a piece of curiosity? I've thought of starting a collection of coins and currency of questionable authenticity. That is, I've thought it might be interesting to actively seek such items out. Of all the interesting currency collections I've seen, I've never seen a collection of modern QA notes. It would be quite interesting to put one together.

I dont think you would have a problem with collecting QA coins but notes are another thing.

I want one of these too! I like seeing the fakes that people make, but I am worried I will get in trouble for holding on to them. Hence why I havent started to collect them yet.

While it's certainly something that would vary from location to location, I've looked into this a *little* bit as far as the US goes. Certainly using counterfeit currency is prohibited. Making copies of notes that aren't in black and white or adhere to certain size restrictions is also prohibited. Really haven't come across anything prohibiting the actual possession of counterfeit currency though. Then again, I haven't really looked that hard.

I think it's a fake. I also don't think it was made on a press or a pro,i think it was made on a copy machine. If you want the people in your neighborhood to know about these fake circulating you may want to contact your local TV station or radio station. John1

I had to wait until I got to work today to post this counterfeit pics of one of the MANY bogus notes my stellar employees have taken over the years. This one is professionally made on real paper complete with hologram and all. Enjoy :)

The first clue was holding it up to the light and seeing Lincoln's watermark in the paper It is a $5 note overprinted with $100.

Does it have that sparkly iridescent ink? I'm surprised it's not harder to acquire that stuff.

Some of you might be familiar with some of my more famous tips from the past: how to get rid of counterfeit money? Put it in the collection plate at church!

Quote: Does it have that sparkly iridescent ink? That last picture doesn't do it justice. The sparkly ink was identical to a real note. In fact I took that note over to the bank when I got it and handed it to the teller and asked if she would accept this if someone tried to cash it in. She looked at me, then it, turned it over and said "sure". Dang... should have cashed it in
