I've looked through threads here and didn't see anything like this exactly, so I thought.............. This exact coin is what my grandfather gave me around 1978 when I was a kid. He received it from his father. He passed away in 1986 at 93, So that makes the history of it in my family from at least 1900 or so. I received a lot of coins from him, but very few in this condition. I have other coins he gave me that are worth more, but as a kid the Indian Head meant so much to me. Luckily he kept this and didn't "rub" them like many of the coins we received. The coin is better than the picture, it still has a little luster to it. I just wanted to share, as in the last few years I have been consumed with the different series I have always enjoyed. I love the IHC, but he also had a few Capped Bust halves. Recently I love the "Capped Bust Halves" which is where my CCF "name" is from, get it, Grandfather and Capped Bust... If any of you have a similar story please list them here. I have shown this coin to my nephew (we don't have kids) and let him know this will be his, which of course has him interested to where he wants ONLY coins as presents from us, where it used to be games or whatever they are interested in nowadays. Look forward to seeing responses. Thanks.

Gift from my grandmother at about age 10. She also gave me about 10 BU 1882's a few of which may be MS-65. She got them all for ... $1 ... at a bank in Nevada in the 1950's:

Fenton, those are GREAT coins. That is a heck of a way to start off. The morgans I received are probably V to VF at best. I always love hearing about buying morgans for 1$ back in the day.

Mydad bought a bag of '65 cents, and we were on one hunt the'65 double dot. I think we found 5. At the time they had quite a premium, but have fizzled since.

My dad got me started back in the 80's. The target, if you want to call it that was to find a '09 S VDB, found a '09 VDB for my folder, but never the S. Once I started going to coin shops/shows, I took a shine to the Morgan, although back then for some reason I thought the Morgan was the Anthony dollar, so I would say I want to collect Anthony dollars. My dad got me a bunch for a present and I opened it expecting these large old silver Morgans, and instead found the Anthony's... a bit of a let down. I didn't have the heart to tell him that these weren't what I wanted actually, so I happily tucked them into my collection.

When I was 14 I worked a cash register at a drive-in movie concession stand. Somebody paid part of their bill with a Morgan. It was love at first sight.

My beginning started with my grandfathers' 1888 Morgan dollar... It was a very common date, but because it was given to me meant that much more... A few years ago it was stolen along with my whole collection, by one of my supposed best friends... Needless to say, my collection had to start from step 1 all over again. And I found safer places for my coins this time around...

My Dad was a small time collector and I can remember sitting down sorting through stacks of pennies, nickels, and dimes as a kid. This coin, weird as it seems, got me back into collecting. 2005 D Washington (California State) Quarter - Silver Surfer Modified

Darth Anarchus, I sure am very sorry to hear what happened with your collection. I cannot even imagine how hurt you were. Did anything happen to your "supposed friend"? I would like to state what I would have wished would have happened to him, but I'm sure that would get edited out of my post.. On a lighter note, I hear most often that people started with Morgans. I seem to be out of the norm. I know that can be an extremely expensive set to complete so I've put my money into primarily what my grandfather left me, Cents ( IHC and Lincolns), Nickels, Dimes (Merc and Roosies), Wash Quarters and the one Capped bust halve he had that got me into that series. Hope all of your collections are going well now.

@grancap- Now I am 30, going to be 31 in a few days, and that situation that brought the demise of my first collection actually made me realize how much I genuinely love this hobby. It made me fall back in love with numismatics... And to me, that is not tragic...

The 1804 dollar.
Back in the late 1960s/early 70s, comic books used to run ads showing the coin, saying that while 19K+ were minted, only a few were known to exist. I think the headline also said they were worth $20,000. We had a small box of old coins that had been handed down through the family, and I was positive that we must have an 1804 in there. I checked... and we didn't. But that notion--as well as a Red Book--got me hooked on the history and beauty (and potential easy profit) of coins.

Mine was the 1943 steel penny. When I was a kid, I got a Whitman folder from my grandfather that had 3 steel pennies in it, and I had never seen one before that. I went online to find out more about them. From then on, I would always look through my pocket change trying to add to my whitman folders, and started buying other coins on ebay.

Quote: Grancap74! Absolutely an incredible coin... Can't believe no one commented on it... I do feel bad that I didn't say anything when I posted my Silver Surfer Quarter. So... Grancap74! That is an amazing IHC! I can see how that would motivate someone to want more spectacular coins like this one! Beautiful!
