My best guess is that someone attempted to alter/erase the mm on this one. The high points on the date and mm make me think that it also had a recent "rub" to check the date, before it was tossed into the bag. What do the rest of you think?

Heck, it's a '22-D...and I only paid $.045 for it. I'm not sure it's worth wasting any acetone on though.

I would still clean it up. 1922-D is a semi-key date. The reverse is in decent shape, detail wise.

The corrosion bites but not as bad as the damage on the portrait. DANG....still a great find!

I'd try to clean it up a bit too. Nice find!

I bet that was a metal detector find before being tossed into the bag. That scratch on the obverse looks new to me. Might have been from whatever was used to dig it up.

I would vote to lightly cleanit up. Nothing major, but a little cleaning will make it a nice hole filler for someone trying to put together a cheap(er) book.

Soak it in lighter fluid. It's got some PVC contamination on it, and the lighter fluid will dissolve that. It wont' turn the coin a funny color either.

That one's rather neat because it's a woodie to boot.

Leave it soak in lighter fluid for a day and take it out, place it on a paper towel and blot the fluid off. Do not abrade the coin ... no rubbing allowed here.

I think you'll be surprised at how it turns out.
