I ran across an early Washington graded MS63 with a star. NGC
The seller is adding about $100 for the star.
It would be a $300 coin with no star.
Sure is pretty, but is a star worth $100 on a $300 coin?

Do you have pictures of the coin? It would depend on the coin but it seems like in this case it would be worth the extra $100. What matters most is that you like the coin.

There are not many early Washingtons that sell for $300 in MS63 and none of these jump by $100 to MS 64.

I've seen several auctions with star designated coins, and it can vary quite a bit. Sometimes it's half the price difference to the next grade, or sometimes it's a full grade difference. Sometimes they go for double list price for the grade.

Is it worth it? Well, how much emphasis do you place on eye appeal? I tend to think eye appeal is first and foremost when it comes to selecting a coin to buy. There are certainly exceptional coins that do not have a special star from a TPG, but those coins carry a premium too.

I was able to find a prior sale of this exact coin. It sold on Heritage on Feb 2009 for $322. Here is the link to that sale:

Hey! Neat trick!
I tracked back to early '09 and found numismedia had basic MS63 at about $312 retail. If I did it right.
So the coin brought a minimal premium at that time . . .

the reason the star usually brings a premium is because the star means it has great eye appeal and that is what will make any coin worth more than one normal coin of the same grade. Great Eye appeal is worth more than a technical grade in my opinion because the ones with superb eye appeal are few and far between in any technical grade
