I've IDed this coin by a partial legend to be Diocletian: IMP DIOCLETIANVS AVG, IOVI CONSERVATI AVGG, with a mint mark of XX omega II. However I haven't been able to come up with a RIC number.

echizento I've been searching for over an hour and have had no luck. First, I think you have one too many letters in the reverse legend. I believe it is IOVI CONVERVAT AVGG. How sure are you of the XX in the mm because I can't read it in the image. Also how sure are you of "II"? Could it be "IT". Even with these small changes to your attribution, I have been unable to ID your coin. Sorry, but I will keep trying. BTW that's a fair reverse on this coin and not a bad obverse either.

JW, In hand I'm able to clearly see XX omega II. It is CONVERVAT AVGG, I don't know why I added the I. I've been going through my collection and adding RIC numbers that were missing, this is one of those.

I think its the following:

IMP DIOCLETIANVS AVG / IOVI CONSERVAT AVGG / XX wreath I gamma - RIC V-2 166 Rome

Obv: Radiate, draped, and cuirassed (?) bust right, as seen from the back.

Rev: Jupiter, naked, standing left (maybe face-on) looking right, scpetre in right hand, and thunderbolt in left. Eagle at feet with wreath in beak.

Minted 292 in Rome - 'AVGG' representing Diocletian and Maximian

Very good bobbyhelmet. I was certain that the mintmark could not be "gamma II", but I was willing to give it a go. As I was heading off to bed last night, I thought about the last possibly being the letter "A", but I think you are correct. Kudos to ya.

I'm guessing Iota + Gamma = workshop 13, the wreath is just a series identifier but could also reflect a victory in 291/292, 'XX' I also assume is for the 20:1 metal ratio.

Not researched any of these, not got time sadly atm and not familiar with these coins so all guesswork and supposition. I'm finding the heavily marked (fields an mms) coins much more satisfying these days, its amazing how much info is on some of the coins.

Thanks JW and Bobby, I knew I could count on you two to figure it out. I could of sworn the center charter was omega not a wreath.

No problem - enjoyed researching this one and trying to work out what all the marks meant. I agree its an odd looking wreath.
