I am looking through the penny section of the current CherryPickers' Guide.

Now I am wondering how many valued coins have slipped through my fingers over the years. Man, and I only thought I knew something about such pennies.

I think the $10 in pennies I have from the bank will take a bit longer than expected now. I am hoping to find something of value, but know it can be some time before any double dies or doubled mintmarks can be discovered.

Keep in mind that there are also hundreds upon hundreds of varieties not listed in the Cherrypicker's Guide.

I agree that not all are listed but are the ones listed in the Guide of more value? How did the authors chose which ones to list? Was their choices based on value, or commonly noted varieties.
( I realize their are many sources that break down all the different denominations.)

Thanks Carl, I go to Coops site all the time. My question is, what criteria did the " CherryPickers' Guide" authors choose the coins listed in their books?

I think there is some information on this listed in the beginning of the book.

I just got the CherryPickers Guide a few weeks ago. It can be a lot of fun. Just today I spotted a 1857 FEC with the Snow-9 Die Clash error in a local coin shop. They didn't notice it (even though it is one of the more obvious errors) so I got it for the price of a normal 1857! Without the guide would have never known to keep an eye out for it.

I wonder that too, how many high-dollar coins went through my fingers, because I didn't know to look for them. But... even with the book I am still not sure sometimes.

I think that's part of the fun. Much like fishing... "you shoulda seen the one that got away!" And the one that got away is what either gets you hooker, or keeps you coming back. Or both.
