I picked up a Large Cent with this label in the "body bag". How does a TPG produce this type of Label?

1798-1c---Illegible-Date---NGC

Would they idetify it this way because of the date the submitter put on the form (as a 1798)? The date that I see is 1800. I will try and put up some images of the coin, but it's rough...P01 (maybe).

Maybe they were able to determine the date based on die markers? Seems a big of a longshot on a P01.

Also not sure why you'd send in a slick like that for grading.

My apologies, but my photographic skills cannot capture the date. Perhaps if I had a better camera, lighting, patience, etc...

Is the coin so dark it blends in with the black background? (jk)

I think the submitter lableled it as 1798, amd NGC couldn't decide what date it was and just marked the submitter's date on it and body bagged it. I think it is definitely 1800.

Looks like an 1800 to me. What likely happened is that NGC was unable to identify the date and labeled it as the submitter said originally.

I don't see the purpose in sending that in, 1798 or 1800.

Edit: I went back to the U.S. Classic Coin Grading and saw this was from 2011. Thought I'd revived an ancient thread!
