are an 1890 cc morgan and a 1881 gold eagle. A co worker, knowing I like coins and that I regularly sell to local shops, asked me to help him sell a few coins he inherited from his father. He gives me a bag with a few V nickels, some foriegn coins, then these guys. Pretty cool if you ask me. Anyway, I dont know what to do. These are obviously nicer than what I expected, but I want to do him justice. Should I reccomend he have them graded, then sell? I would have to send him to a shop who would try to buy at melt, but I dont know how much work he wants to do in preperation for selling. Please give me some advice on how he/we should proceed. Thanks!

It depends...are they worth slabbing? My rule of thumb is are they worth $100 USD or not? The CC Morgan and Gold Eagle are probably pretty good contenders, not sure about your V nickels, what are their dates and condition? How about some pictures? I am not sure about foreign coins, but someone with some knowledge should chime in before too long. I would keep them out of the bag and place them in flexible flips so that further damage is minimized.

A few possibilities come to mind. 1) Take the collection to at least two dealers and get their buy offers. Do not sell the coins to them at this point. 2) Offer to list the coins on ebay. You should charge a fee for this service I would think unless this is a good friend and you are willing to work gratis. 3) List the Morgan and eagle separately, putting the opening bid at or above the highest dealer offer. Make sure you get some decent pictures to include with the listings. Note that your ebay fees will total around 10% of the final sale. 4) Check the V nickels for key dates (1884, 1885, 1886, 1912-S) and high-grade coins and list these separately. Common, low-grade V nickels can be listed as a group. 5) Unless you want to research the foreign coins in detail I would just pull out any silver and gold and list the rest in a bulk lot with a low starting bid. If you provide a detailed list of the coins you may improve your chance of getting a decent price. If you want to build up enough posts (250 minimum?) you can offer the coins here on CCF. You might also buy the coins yourself, with an offer above whatever the dealers are willing to pay. I would not invest grading fees on these coins unless you are confident the Morgan and eagle are no-problem coins in in MS grade. Otherwise you probably won't recover the grading fees when you sell. Just my off-the-cuff thoughts. Good luck!

Why not just check out the selling prices on ebay or a coin price list somewhere and make him an offer.

I'd just give him an offer.

I may just go to a shop and ask them what they would pay. I dont have any experience with either of these coins so I couldnt give an idea of value. I will work on pictures so you all can help me with a grade/value.
I may offer on the morgan but the eagle is wayyy out of my price range. Theres a wide range on prices, depending on grade, so this is where I am stuck.

jessvc1, its in pretty good shape too... a little wear on the cheek, and a few nicks here and there, but some nice luster. theres a spot on the reverse (who knows what it is) but overall, nice looking coin for the low mintage. on ebay its listed for anywhere from 50 bucks to several hundred.

I suggest using Photograde to get a grade on the coin......and using Numismedia to find the value of that particular grade.
What denomination is the gold piece?

Can you post some pics so we can see if they are even real? How does a small collection contain 2 good coins like that?

On the foreign coins can you list the dates and countries & the value of course. They could be worth more than you think.

Correct, it is a 10 dollar gold piece. On the foriegns, I have looked at a few and have found: 1948 GB large one penny 1943 Nicaraguan 10 centavos 1944 Nazi pfennig
Again, I dont know alot about Morgans, so I will research the tailfeathers variety. I will check the sites for grade.
Im trying to post pictures, but I am technologically challenges, lol.
Stay tuned.
