I saw greatsoutherncoin sell one on ebay raw a few years back. Without getting into the reputation of the seller, I will say that it was a very nice specimen. Nice mirrored fields with no toning or distracting marks. I believe it sold somewhere north of $7000!

A nice alternative to that costly and elusive high end uncirculated specimen?

I agree it is a great coin, but it seems to be a bit over priced for its grade. Take a look at a 1877 Indian in Ms-65 RB and that will cost you a good bit more. I can only guess these were stashed away as proofs and the ones that did get circulated in the higher grades are harder to find? Just my thoughts.

This is going to sound ridiculous but a 1877 without the weak reverse just isn't right

No offense to those of you that appreciate rainbow toned coins, but I do not find that coin attractive. I am searching for an appropriate adjective to describe that coin. Too 'gaudy'? for me.
