I got an America Silver Eagle with the eagle and liberty dress that looks like it was plated in gold. It doesn't look like it was painted. Any one ever seen anything like this?

I believe the "National Collectors Mint" or the "Morgan Mint" sells those. Sacreligious!

they are plated in gold not painted but they really have no premium over a regular ASE and some people just plain do not like them because they were modified outside the mint

Personally I like those. Not a key coin and it looks good.

The Morgan Mint screws up coins like that. We have a set of 4 2006 nickels: one BU, one colorized, one gold plated and one hologram.Just give me 4 BU nickels ! They kill our coins!

10x, ummmm....*points at icon*...just sayin...

The hologramed coins are wicked cool too. Again, its not done to key or classic coins.

I'm a little torn on it. Don't really care for post-mint mods in general but I think this example is cool. Doesn't affect melt.

BUT would it affect any premium that dealers might pay since most charge/pay premiums for ASE's?

Thanks for the quick info. I found that these were done by the washington mint, due to Liberty arm / head/ and feet were not plated. they made 250,000 of these. looks like intriquit work to do so.
I like it, and I keep it for the long term. Never know, attitudes may change.
Thanks again.

Out of curiosity, does anybody know how they selectively gold plate coins like that? Is it simply that during the plating process the higher relief bits get plated first, or do they have to somehow mask certain areas to prevent them from being plated?

Personally, I loathe the painted coins because they look so cheap and gaudy. I actually like the gold plated coins, however. After all, it is gold...

I think they did them this way because of the Britannia's that they made like them, the Britannia's were actually done at their mint though
