I would still argue that it is not a 'Micro D'. My eyes see a quadruple punched D, the fourth punch was offset to the bottom drastically, and slightly rotated clockwise. The bottom portion of the letter can barely be seen, creating the illusion of a smaller letter.

SPP - I agree with you. I have a few of these and under 30x it looks to me exactly like you describe. The 1881 "micro D" in DEI is different. I am pretty sure they erroneously used a D punch from a 10 cent legend on that one. Not so on this 1882 die.

Quote: Its official..... Actually, it was official in the early 1960s, when Hans Zoell published that variety as S5c (Open D, single serif 1882).

I didn't mean it literally..I was just excited to see it on the holder... Its one of those things...when you put up a picture...half of the people will tell you the D is normal, and they see nothing there... This way...at least a professional agrees there is something there, and I'm not just imagining things ...

Nice coin danlos! It does appear to be punched four times though unless I am seeing things wrong.

Thanks Darryl... you and SPP are right...this one is quad punched...I have another example however, that is the exact same thing, but one of the punches above the D doesn't show. I think that's why the coin was described on Canadian Copper Coins dot com originally as a triple punched D. You can also only see 3 punches on the bottom right loop of the D as well. I used the term "micro D" due to one of the punches being so much lower than the rest, and smaller in appearance...although as Rob Turner and SPP pointed out, its not the same as the 1881H micro D where an actual smaller D punch was used. Although this one is hard to find, apparently its not rare. But the offset of the error really fascinates me with these kinds of coins.
