I did something today I tell others not to do. I bought a coin I cannot identify off ebay from a seller in Portugal I do not know. My only excuse (and rationalization) is that the cost of the coin was $3.25 plus shipping for a grand total of $8.25. If the coin is a fake I will not have lost my shirt. Now to the coin itself. I cannot make out the legend on either side and the obverse bust is not only unfamiliar to me, but looks fake or more modern than Roman. The reverse is what caught my eye and the sole reason for making the purchase, Does anyone recognize this coin (sorry for the poor quality images. They are the sellers pictures)?

Quote:I bought a coin I cannot identify off ebay from a seller in Portugal I do not know I'm terrible for this too, dont worry - I even bid on auctions with no pictures as my 'need to know' is stronger than the sensible voice in my head saying 'NO' I have some thoughts on this coin but will let others 'have a pop' at it first.

Don't leave me hanging too long. You know how these things drive me nuts until I find an answer.
Good to know I'm not alone and there are others in this nut house along side me.

Let me know when you cant take it anymore and I'll PM you - Think it would be good for a few other members to try their ID skills on this one before the answer is posted publicly.

I have it now bobbyhelmet. Doug provided the needed information for me to attribute. But, I will hold off to see if anyone else finds the answer and I would like to see what you have come up with as well. I think I did fine this go around. And I think you are correct when you say it's worth more than I paid. Substantially I would say.

Bobbyhelmet and I are in agreement on this coins attribution. I'll post it tomorrow some time. See what you can come up with.

Yes, the photo is rather blurry and hard to make out some of the letters. I finally have a good idea what some of the word abbreviations means on Roman coins now. At least a start of it, after doing lots of reading.
