I have only 1 mercury to complete my set, of course it's the 16D. I have been waiting for some time, but have decided to move forward so I can finish the set and get it off my mind and concentrate on others. I have really gotten frustrated in my search-it seems that they are all overpriced. I use numismedia for comparison (knowing that it is high) and can't even find what I am looking for that matches numismedia's prices. The closest I have found is a PCGS VG8 with an ask of $1550. The coin looks fine to me, but it still seems overpriced. Am I missing something? Am I off the mark or is that a fair price? Opinions wanted. Thanks.

It seems a little high. VG should be around $1400 or so for a nice one.

Where are you looking? Going to a coin show with lots of competition might solve your problem. The 1916-D is an over valued coin, except the series is popular so you can't do anything about it. I would say $1300 at VG-8. Depends what grade you're looking for too.

That price seems high unless it's for a very strong and attractive VG8. Here's a PCGS G06 for auction at $850 (+10% Buyer's Premium) that looks like a nice, original piece. Might not be the strongest G06 you can find but if it goes for $935 total, it would be a fair deal. http://www.greatcollections.com/Coi...me-PCGS-G-06

Quote: The 1916-D is an over valued coin indeed. Not nearly as bad as the 09-S VDB. A huge percentage of its entire mintage is still alive today, most of it in high grades. All while its cousin the IHC 09-S is worth approx half as much across all grades and probably has 25% of the surviving examples. To the OP, yeah that does sound a little high to me too. The 16-D pretty much has to be purchased slabbed due to all the fakes out there, and this makes it more expensive. However, I think you could find a similar example for $200 less or so....or just drop a grade to G-4 and pick it up for well less than $1000

Quote: Where are you looking? Going to a coin show with lots of competition might solve your problem. Best advise. If you can find one you should be able to come up with one for a lot less than that one. Just make sure it is authenticated since it is one of the most faked coins. As to a completed set, sometimes that depends on how you store them. If in some Albums, there may be a slot for the 45 Micro S, the 42/41, the 42D/41. Others may not include those.

Bh1964-I looked at the coin you referenced. I have no experience with GreatCollections. Have you or anyone else and if so, what was your experience with them?

I have been a regular customer with Great Collections this fall and have been very happy with the coins and the service. Great Collections is run by Ian Russell, formerly of Teletrade, and is a solid, reputable operation. If I were in the market for a 1916-D Merc, I'd bid on that G06. I believe they are still offering free insured shipping on your first purchase. Best of luck!

That price sounds fairly high for that date. I wonder though, what is about the average price you can get Mercury dimes for at a coin shop? Not including key dates.
