Anyone ever go into a coin shop when somebody was selling a a really big/expensive collection? Yesterday, I was, and this guy had a plain old box just filled with coins. When I was talking to him, he mentioned that the gold coins were in a brown pastry bag from Starbucks, and I was all huh? Ended up getting aroun 9K for the collection, which means if I ever go into sell, I'll be going to him. He looked up each coin on the greysheet, and gave the guy fair value.

So, anybody else? Anyone see anyone getting ripped, etc? Thanks!

I've seen that happen four or five times when I was in my favorite coin store.

The owners of the store are always honest with the customer, telling them if what they have is just worthless "junk," or looking up fair prices to offer if they are in the market for what they have to sell.

I have had to bite my lip a time or two because I have wanted to say, "Hey, let me see what you have there. Maybe I would be interested." Of course that wouldn't be right, so I keep quiet.

Anyway, the answer to the question is yes, I have seen similar situations, and the coin store owners have always been fair and honest.

I've seen it all too frequently.
Recently (about two years ago)at a coin show someone was offered $24 each for two proof American Eagles. They were the two scarce dates, 1994 and 1995. After the guy left I was offered them at $80 each. I refused on principal, but maybe I screwed myself. Today they trend for $$250 and $210.
Oh, well.

That is good to hear, that this dealer is treating customers fair, and I believe most established dealers do treat customers fairly. Too bad there are scavengers out there trying to get a so called "buy" (really ripping him off) and then bragging about how they took this guy. How can they live with themselves?

My wife bought me a few coins for Christmas and got a really good price. She could have been ripped off because she really had no idea (other than an O mintmark) what she was buying. The guy behind the counter (not the owner) gave her a good deal and everyone was happy! This is my new favorite coin shop!

My local dealer always looks up the quality pieces on the Greysheet when he's making "buy" offers. He's honest and ethical.

I saw this kind of thing in Las Vegas. People with more money than brains bought ancient coins (even though authentic) for three to four times the fair market value than if purchased at auction or through a reputable dealer.

There's only 2 coin shops in my town - one of them only sells gold coins, so I'm pretty much stuck at the other one. The dealer is often slightly rude, but his prices are usually reasonable so I shop there unless I want to wait for a coin show. As far as I know he is fair, but I've seen a few sellers who don't know much come in with old, worn coins not realizing that most of them aren't too valuable.

Have you checked out local coin clubs.
I am in south Florida and within an hour of my home there are 4 coin "shows" each month and there are great opportunities for exchanges purchases and sharing of information.

I believe in sponsoring my local clubs even if I can not attend on a regular basis.

The craziest sales I have seen with my local coin dealer is an investor bringing in an Aussie kilo gold coin. You obviously don't want to know how high the figure was.
